I recently set up WordPress on my own domain – it wasn’t too tough but if I would have had the above information, it would have even been easier. My next hurdle is an upgrade!

I’m glad that the instructions helped.

You shouldn’t need another domain. If you set up the blog as mydomain.com/blog , you can also create a subdomain pointer from blog.mydomain.com there. It won’t matter which one a person types into the browser, you’ll end up in the same place. You can then use other directories, as you wish.

If you surf around on this web site enough, you’ll discover that I’ve got WordPress installed on the blogs directory, and Drupal installed on the commons directory. The trick is to get style sheets across multiple platforms that look sufficiently similar that your “branding” is established.

Hi David, this tutorial helped me a lot. I have had some ideas on how to do this but was afraid I might screw up. So I did exactly as you said and all is fine. Most likely will use one of the templates you pointed out. Still thinking on that one. Any way let me get on the the meat of the reason I have posted. My question is this. I have a Business Directory and want to blog. Should I host the blog on sub-domain as http:/ /wwwdotmydomain.com/blog or blogdotmydomain.com or should I get another separate domain? Sorry to put you on the spot, you seemed like the right person for advice. Thaks for sharing this fine tutorial.

Beautifully detailed list of setting up a new WP site… I almost felt like I was reliving a weekend about a year ago when I did exactly what you outlined.

As a tip… One WordPress plugin that has been recommended over and over to me is All in One SEO. It does boost your sites search rankings and is quite intuitive for non-SEOs.

Good article. I was a little overwhelmed when I first tried editing a wordpress theme.
However, it is not as bad as it seems when you take it piece by piece. You can’t break it.
